Seasonal Spread Entry and Exit Rules Without Hindsight

Selecting the best entry and exit after reviewing every historical outcome can make ordinary noise look like a reliable seasonal edge. A useful rule should survive small changes.

Selecting the best entry and exit after reviewing every historical outcome can make ordinary noise look like a reliable seasonal edge. A useful rule should survive small changes.

Define dates before scoring

Use a calendar rule or a rule based on a known event, then apply it consistently. Specify how weekends, holidays and missing prices are handled. The same economic structure must be used each year; changing the delivery months mid-sample creates another strategy.

Separate discovery from confirmation

An optimizer can identify promising windows in a training sample. Reserve later years, or use another predeclared validation method, to ask whether the window remained useful outside that search. An optimized win rate is not a forward probability.

Check neighboring windows

Shift entry and exit by several trading days and compare the distribution of outcomes. If performance collapses outside one exact date pair, the thesis may be overfit or depend on one unusual year. Compare median and worst year as well as average.

Set operational exits

A seasonal target is not the only exit consideration. Each leg has expiry and liquidity constraints. Define a maximum holding date, a loss response and what to do if the economic thesis changes. Backtests should stop before a practical delivery or broker deadline.

Research the exact spread

Compare dated legs, historical years and current market conditions before using an average curve.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 90% historical win rate sufficient?

No. Check sample size, selection bias, average loss, worst adverse move and costs.

Should the exit be a fixed date?

It can be, provided the rule is defined and executable for the actual dated contracts.
