A screener rank is a starting point. It condenses a historical sample and can hide the months, direction and risk that produced an attractive score.
Read the entire row
Identify the market, structure, exact dated legs, buy and sell direction, seasonal dates, sample size, consistency and average move. A larger dollar result is not automatically better if the ratio uses more contracts or more capital.
Open the underlying history
Inspect the chart and yearly table. Ask whether a single year dominates the average, how many valid trades exist, and whether losses cluster in recent years. Compare the optimized window with nearby dates rather than copying one precise result without challenge.
Match current conditions
Review the present forward curve, fundamental context and liquidity of the actual dated legs. A historical pattern based on storage may behave differently in an inverted market. An unavailable contract, expired leg or past entry window makes the ranking non-actionable today.
Convert to a trade plan
Calculate P&L in the basket’s actual units, estimate broker margin, commissions and slippage, and plan exits for all legs. Record why the idea survived or failed each check. The best research outcome is sometimes to reject a high-ranked candidate.
Research the exact spread
Compare dated legs, historical years and current market conditions before using an average curve.
