Compare two hard wheat markets with separate crop calendars, venues and delivery economics. This guide keeps the exchange, dated legs and historical-data boundary visible so the quoted relationship can be checked.
Define the pair
A one-to-one research quote can subtract Kansas City hard red winter wheat from Minneapolis hard red spring wheat for the same delivery month and year. Both contracts must be in comparable cents-per-bushel units and have actual observations on the same trading date. The sign convention is essential: reversing the order reverses every displayed spread value and every long-position result.
For 30 June 2025, the imported December Minneapolis value is 639.00 cents and the December Kansas City value is 550.00 cents. The matched historical MGE–KC quote is +89.00 cents. That number is a dated comparison, not a September 2026 market premium.
Why can the premium change?
Spring and winter wheat differ by class, growing region and seasonal exposure. Protein and quality, transportation, regional inventories and demand can alter their relative prices. Even when both outrights move with the global wheat market, the price difference can expand or contract sharply. Correlation is not a guarantee of a bounded spread.
MIAX’s Minneapolis contract and CME’s Kansas City contract also have different venue and delivery rules. Confirm the exact instrument and month on both sides before calling a quote an executable intermarket spread. Exchange-listed offsets available for CME HRS versus KC do not automatically apply to an MIAX–KC pair.
Backtest and execution
Match same-month dated contracts and same-day observations for every historical year. Count the valid days and inspect each year separately; a long average is not a forecast. If 2026 MGE prices are absent, no 2026 current MGE–KC difference exists in the dataset even when current Kansas City prices are available.
Ask the broker for the margin and routing of the exact cross-venue legs, not a generic “wheat spread” margin. Separate execution can introduce legging risk, and contract month liquidity may differ between the two markets.

Educational historical research, not investment advice. Futures and multi-leg spreads involve substantial loss, execution and delivery risk. Historical results do not guarantee future outcomes. Imported Minneapolis prices stop on 24 October 2025; current quotes and margin must be verified independently.
